Mahabalipuram: The Third Vision

From Mahishasura’s fall arose the sacred might,
Durga’s power, Shiva’s will and cosmic light.
With Brahma, Vishnu standing as decree,
The Pallava kings shaped stones of unity.

Guides and scholars still debate the scene—
Are these the Pandavs’ chariots once seen?
Or was this land a sculptor’s living school,
Where form was tested, chisel made the rule?

We paused, reflected—then a thought took birth,
A third perception rose beyond the earth:
The pillars of good rule, firm and true—
Strength and valour, skill and virtue too.

Their symbols stand in figures carved and grand:
Durga the force, Arjun’s steady hand,
Bhima’s might, Nakul-Sahdev’s skills and art,
Yudhishthir’s dharma—the ruler’s heart.

Less vital still the question debated yet:
Did Arjun here perform his stern tapasya set?
For kingly rule demands ascetic grace,
A yogi’s restraint on power’s face.

Experiment follows the theme it serves,
Be it art or history that time preserves.
Whether fact survives or fades from view,
Inspiration lives—and that is true.
