Devayani and Kachchh: A Tale of Perseverance
In my poetry blogs, I often reference a remarkable character from the Mahabharata—Kachchh, the son of Guru Brihaspati. He was entrusted with the formidable task of acquiring a unique Vidya from Guru Shukracharya, the spiritual guide of the Asuras, which had the power to revive fallen warriors. This knowledge was crucial for the Devas, who were suffering heavy losses in a prolonged war against the Asuras.
Kachchh became a disciple of Guru Shukracharya and gained the affection of his daughter, Devayani. She revived him multiple times with the very Vidya he sought, using her father’s powers. However, the Asuras, determined to prevent this knowledge from passing into enemy hands, resorted to a desperate measure—they burned Kachchh, mixed his ashes in a drink, and served it to Guru Shukracharya.
Yet, their plan backfired. Devayani persuaded her father to revive Kachchh, unknowingly bringing him back from within his own body. In doing so, Kachchh not only survived but also learned the coveted Vidya. To restore himself, Shukracharya had to teach Kachchh how to bring him back to life—a twist of fate that sealed Kachchh’s success.
With his mission accomplished, Kachchh returned to his clan, leaving behind Devayani, who loved him deeply and had offered him a life of luxury. However, his unwavering focus on duty and purpose led him to forsake personal attachments in favor of his higher goal.
