In today’s blog, I present a poetic commentary on the deterioration of values in our education system. Both the Hindi and English versions are provided below.

शिक्षा, ज्ञान और जन कल्याण

जब मनुष्य रहता था वन में, स्कूल कॉलेज नहीं थी बंदिश,

असीम जिज्ञासा से हो प्रेरित, वह अर्जित करता था ज्ञान अर्जित।

प्रकृति के सब अवयव, प्रयोगशाला थे अनूठी,

सीख जाने का आभास मात्र, था अलौकिक अनुभूति।

न शर्मिंदगी थी असफलता से, न सफलता का अहम्,

शायद ही किसी को तब, होगा ज्ञानी होने का भ्रम।

धीरे-धीरे व्यवस्थाओं में, जब बाँट दिया गया ज्ञानार्जन,

संकुचित होती गयी सोच, और अम्बर से ऊँचा हुआ अहम्।

आश्रमों में ऋषि-मुनियों से, सीखने में थी एक आशा,

कर्तव्यपालन हो तन्मयता से, और शांत हो जिज्ञासा।

केवल जीवकोपार्जन के सन्दर्भ में, जब से दी जाने लगी शिक्षा,

जिज्ञासा छूटने लगी पीछे, प्रबल धन कमाने की इच्छा।

पाठ्यक्रम, डिग्री व संस्थान, बने ज्ञान के आयाम,

ज्ञानार्जन पर नहीं अब, डिग्री अर्जन पर है ध्यान।

जितनी बड़ी डिग्रीयां, उनसे कहीं ऊँचा अहम्,

सर्वज्ञाता सर्वोपरि होने का, एक्सपर्ट्स को वहम।

शिक्षा का उद्देश्य था, जन कल्याण में योगदान,

पर लगता है, जाता नहीं इस तरफ किसी का ध्यान।

निवेश पब्लिक वर्क्स का, अक्सर होता है फेल,

हर निदान आधा-अधूरा, दिखता नहीं तालमेल।

अपने अपने अहम् और वहम से सब अधिकारी संचित,

नेताओं के वादों से भ्रमित जन मानस रहें  चिंतित।

विचार विमर्श कर आपस में, काम का होता है ज़िक्र,

पर असल में किसी को इसकी, रहती नहीं कोई फिक्र।

राजनीतिज्ञ तो बस केवल, एक-दूसरे की खींचें टांग,

जनता की चिंता है दिखावा सबका, कुर्सी केवल प्रधान।

किस के पास समय है, जो करे निष्पक्ष विश्लेषण,

तब तक सब खुश हैं, जब तक जनता करे न अंकेक्षण।

साक्षर हो कर भी अज्ञानी, जब तक रहे जनता,

तब खुश हैं सारे नेता, और सारे नौकरशाह।

साक्षरता से ज़रूरी है शिक्षा, और शिक्षा से ज़रूरी है ज्ञान,

इन सब से भी ज़रूरी है, राष्ट्र का चरित्र निर्माण।

जब तक उपरोक्त अपेक्षा, रहेगी केवल एक मधुर स्वप्न,

तब तक नहीं सुरक्षित भविष्य, लाख चाहे करें जतन।

English Version:

Education, Knowledge, and Public Welfare

When man lived in forests, there were no schools or colleges,
Inspired by endless curiosity, he gained knowledge through the ages.
Nature’s every element, a unique lab in his quest,
Learning came with divine experience; no failure caused unrest.

Neither shamed by failure nor success filled with arrogance,
None considered themselves sages in the quest for penance.
Slowly, when education became a structured domain,
The horizons of thought narrowed, with pride and ego to gain.

In hermitages with sages, learning held a hopeful aim,
To perform duties with sincerity, while curiosity was tame.
But as education evolved as a means to earn,
Curiosity lagged behind, wealth became the only concern.

Syllabi, degrees, and institutes replaced knowledge’s face,
Attention shifted from learning to the degree’s wild chase.
The higher the degrees, the larger grew the ego,
Experts believed they knew all, though their depth was hollow.

Education’s goal was public welfare, to make a difference grand,
But now, it seems, no one has this in their hand.
Investments in public works often tend to fail,
Half-done solutions arise, with no proper trail.

All in power are lost in their own inhibitions,
Misled by political bosses, ignoring the people’s conditions.
Coordination is the buzzword, but does anyone care?
In their own glare, everyone seems unaware.

Politicians are busy pulling each other down,
Who cares for the people, their anguish, their frown?
Who has time for impartial scrutiny here?
Until the people audit, nothing will appear clear.

Even when literate, if the public remains unwise,
Politicians and bureaucrats enjoy undeserved prize.
Beyond literacy is education, and beyond education is wisdom,
Yet above all, it’s character that builds the Nation’s kingdom.

Until our hopes remain but a distant dream,
Our nation’s future will be uncertain, or so it may seem.
