When I listen to news of flooded rivers and water entering homes more often than before, more frequent landslides and destruction, increased incidences of ground sinking, and the enhanced risks due to climate change, I start contemplating. It seems that nature, particularly the rivers and the earth, are retaliating and punishing mankind. Inspired by these reflections, I penned a poem in both Hindi and English. I am happy to share it with you:
नदी मनुष्य से
मैं नहीं तुम
आये थे मेरे पास
ले कर प्यास
बुझाने की आस
फिर तुमने
मुझे बांध कर
खेतों की प्यास बुझाई
और अपनी भूख मिटाई
पर तुम्हारा तो
लालच बढ़ता गया
मेरा पानी दूषित किया
मेरे बच्चों को शोषित किया
तुम यहाँ भी नहीं रुके
मेरे तटों का क्षेत्र मुझ से छीना
दूभर कर दिया तुमने
मेरे मित्र पेड़ों का जीना
यह तुम्हारी करतूतें हैं
कि मेरे विदेशी मेहमान
अन्यत्र जा कर
बना रहे हैं नई पहचान
अब कहते हो
मुझ में उफान भी न आये
कभी बाढ़ घुस कर तुम्हारे घर में
तुम्हारे ज़ुल्मों की याद न दिलाये
तुम ज़ुल्म कर मुझे संकुचित करो
और मैं न बदलूँ अपना रास्ता
ऐसे स्वार्थी जीवों से
मेरा भला क्या वास्ता
अब तो तुमने बहुत कर ली
अब मेरी बारी है
प्रकृति के साथ मिल कर
तुम्हें दण्डित करने की तैयारी है

The River to Man
It wasn’t I who came to you,
But you who sought my grace,
With thirst in your heart,
Hoping I’d embrace.
You chained me to your will,
To quench your fields’ thirst,
Fed your endless hunger,
As your greed grew worse.
You tainted my waters,
Exploited my kin,
Took what wasn’t yours,
Let your vices begin.
You stole my shores,
Made life hard for my trees,
My foreign guests have fled,
Seeking new destinies.
Now you demand calm,
No floods to remind,
Of the wrongs you’ve done,
Of the ties you’ve unbind.
You confine and wrong me,
Expect me to stay,
But with such selfish beings,
I cannot obey.
You’ve had your way too long,
Now it’s my turn,
With nature by my side,
For retribution, you’ll yearn.
Together with nature,
Your lesson is nigh,
Prepare yourself, human,
For justice to apply.
