During the colonial era, our education systems wholly disregarded this aspect, aiming instead to produce low-IQ-driven workers, contrary to the values encouraged by religions like Hinduism, which promote self-discovery and understanding of humanity. The systemic dismantling of our knowledge institutions and the discouragement of Sanskrit, the principal language of our scriptures, reduced literate individuals to mere tools for increasing government revenue or factory output at minimal cost.

Even after gaining independence, there was scant encouragement for exploring deep thought and our cultural heritage. The emphasis remained solely on economic growth, with the spiritual and philosophical aspects entrusted to pundits, maulvis, and preachers, many of whom lacked understanding. Meanwhile, the industry-centric West, including the USA, placed little importance on such introspective exploration. Consequently, we find ourselves uncertain of our limits and increasingly apprehensive of our own creations.

The Dilemma of Fascist Meritocracy

With AI’s advancement, there looms a significant risk of cultivating a fascist meritocracy where nations wielding superior AI capabilities dictate societal worth, potentially marginalizing those unable to compete with machines. This scenario provokes profound existential questions about humanity’s place in a technologically dominated world and underscores critical ethical considerations regarding the fairness and inclusivity of such a societal structure.

The Plight of Ordinary Humans

Reintroducing divinity and character building is essential for humanity’s betterment, virtues often overshadowed by our relentless pursuit of progress.

As a technocrat, I acknowledge the importance of science, mathematics, civil engineering, and water resources engineering, while cherishing the values instilled by my grandparents. With my professional pursuits now a secondary priority, I seize the opportunity to deepen these values. However, the burgeoning materialism among today’s urban upper-middle class and wealthy alarms me. Are we hurtling toward a predominantly capitalist, valueless society? This is where teachings of divinity and the cultivation of humane character from an early age can offer a crucial counterbalance.

Practical Steps to Integrate Divinity and Character Building

1. Mindful Technology Use: Set boundaries on technology consumption to create space for spiritual and personal growth. Designate tech-free intervals for reflection, meditation, or meaningful conversations.
2. Daily Reflection: Incorporate practices like journaling or meditation into your routine to align actions and intentions with spiritual and moral values.
3. Community Engagement: Participate in communities sharing your values, whether religious congregations, spiritual groups, or volunteer organizations. Such engagement reinforces commitment to divinity and character building.
